Cape Town ravaged by fire for over a week

It is not uncommon for fires to sprout in Cape Town during the dry summer days (Cape Town experiences its rainfall during the Winter season) but this fire was like the fires of Mordor from the Lord of the Rings books.

Starting on the 1st of March 2015 in Muizenberg and spreading to Ou Kapse Weg, Chapmans Peak, Hout Bay and Tokai, it decimated 13 properties along it's path of destruction.

By the 4th of March 500 people had been evacuated including frail-care patients from an old age home.

It had taken around 1900 firefighters and volunteers, including 26 aircraft, to fight this inferno before it wreaked more damage to residential areas of the pristine southern suburbs of Cape Town.

Unfortunately, on the 8th of March one of the brave pilots fighting this fire had perished in a helicopter crash whilst flying over the Cape Point Nature Reserve.
